(Bengali descendants turn to terror in Rakhine (Arakan) State in Myanmar)
Race tensions between the Rakhine majority and Bengali immigrants heightened Friday when Bengalis burned down 17 Rakhine villages and attacked Rakhine inhabitants in the western town of Maung Taw. Four people were confirmed dead and several injured as violence erupted at different locations in the western region of Myanmar.
The incident was sparked by the murder of 10 Myanmar Muslims earlier this week. An angry mob stopped a passenger bus travelling near Taunggoke town and an argument that ensued resulted in 10 Muslims being killed. The Rakhine locals were responding to the rape and murder of a Rakhine girl three Myanmar Bengalis were accused of committing.
Bengali residents of Maung Taw raided houses owned by Rakhine residents and while these residents were being evacuate opened fire into the crowd. Bengali residents also hurled stones at Buddhist monasteries and torched Rakhine villages around Maung Taw.
The government issued the police the order to use arms to control riots and declared curfew. Bengali militia are also said to be attempting armed raids. The attack was believed to be systemic with fire arms being acquired as early as three days ago. The government sent troops and navy to counter terrorist attacks and emergency is being held in the capital Naypyidaw to deal with the escalating problems.
Several Islamic organizations in major cities condemned the Bengali Muslims for recent developments and called for protection of Buddhist victims and justice. Angry Myanmar netizens flooded social networks with comments denouncing the terrorist acts and Myanmar Muslims are also said to have joined by showing their disapproval of Bengali actions.
